For remodeling contractors

Business coaching for remodelers, from a remodeler.

I've run Colorado Roofing and Remodeling in the Denver area since 2011. I coach remodeling company owners on the business side: pricing jobs that change as they go, knowing what each project made, keeping cash moving on long jobs, and building a team that runs without you on site.

Sound familiar?

Remodeling is where good contractors lose money quietly.

Every job is different, homeowners live in the middle of the work, and the scope changes as the walls open up. Those are the problems we work on.

Jobs that grow while the price doesn't

Scope creep and unpriced extras eat remodeling margins. We put change orders in writing, priced with the same math as the main job.

Not knowing what a job made

Long jobs with many trades make it easy to lose track. Simple job costing tells you what each project actually made, and which kinds of work to chase.

Cash tied up for weeks

Materials, subs and payroll go out long before the final payment comes in. We plan payment terms and cash so the next job isn't paying for the last one.

You're the project manager on everything

If every decision runs through you, the company can't grow. We write down your standards and develop people who can run a job to them.

How I run my own company

The same rules indoors as on the roof.

Every customer gets an exact written price before work begins. We take no deposit, and the job gets cleaned up at the end of every day, because the homeowner is living in the middle of it.

Rules like that only work when the numbers underneath are solid. That's what I coach: the system behind the promises.

What coaching covers

Four areas, in order.

Numbers. Job costing by category on every project, closed out within a week of finishing, and a weekly look at cash and money owed.

Pricing. Prices built from real costs, overhead and profit, with change orders priced the same way. Margin, not markup.

Sales. Estimates that say exactly what is and isn't included, payment terms in writing and a follow-up system that doesn't depend on your memory.

Crew. Written standards, a lead who can run a project, and clear rules for what they decide and what comes to you.

In a different trade? The same problems show up across residential work. See how coaching works, or read about coaching for roofers.
